The Cosmos Prize and Festival were envisioned by Prof. Gianfranco Bertone as a platform to celebrate the union of science, culture, and education, with the aim to promote scientific culture, and to inspire awe, curiosity, and a lifelong fascination with the universe.
The realization of this concept was made possible through the dedicated efforts and collaboration of the Città Metropolitana of Reggio Calabria, and in synergy with the Planetario Pythagoras of Reggio Calabria, as well as the Italian Ministry of Education, and of Foreign Affairs.
Tens of world-renowned scientists participate in shaping and animating the Cosmos Prize initiative, contributing their expertise and passion for science communication. These scientists, drawn from a diverse range of disciplines, play a pivotal role in setting the vision and direction of the Cosmos Prize. Their involvement ensures that the initiative is grounded in scientific excellence and is capable of engaging a wide audience, particularly young people from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Over the past years, the Cosmos Prize initiative has actively engaged thousands of high school students in a unique educational journey. This endeavor has involved them in the reading, debating, and evaluation of outstanding science outreach books. Through this process, students have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the latest scientific discoveries and theories, presented in an accessible and engaging manner.
This initiative not only promotes scientific literacy among young learners but also fosters critical thinking, public speaking, and collaborative discussion skills. By directly involving students in the evaluation process, the Cosmos Prize initiative empowers the next generation of scientists, thinkers, and leaders, encouraging them to explore the universe’s mysteries with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Following successful editions in Italy, the Cosmos Prize and Cosmos Festival have now expanded their horizons to other countries, also thanks to the efforts of the Outreach task force of the European Consortium for Astroparticle Physics. This expansion reflects the growing interest and recognition of the event’s significance in promoting the wonders of the universe beyond its initial borders. By hosting the festival in these new locations, we aim to engage a broader audience, fostering a deeper appreciation of science across Europe and beyond.
