Students choose a graphic novel on quantum mechanics

Italy’s student juries crowned Dio gioca a dadi con il mondo, the story of quantum mechanics told in comics.

On 15 May, representatives of the student juries gathered at the Planetario Pythagoras in Reggio Calabria to proclaim the winner of the Premio Cosmos degli Studenti 2026.

Their choice: Dio gioca a dadi con il mondo by physicist Giuseppe Mussardo and illustrator Luca Morici, a graphic novel that retells the birth of quantum mechanics with wit and lightness. It is a second success with student readers for both: Mussardo won the Premio Cosmos in 2024, and Morici co-signed that year’s students’ prize winner.

The five finalists ranged from gravitational waves to the imagined Mars of science fiction. The main Premio Cosmos, chosen by the scientific committee, will be awarded in Reggio Calabria in October 2026.

The winning book

The other finalists: Matteo Barsuglia, La rivoluzione delle onde gravitazionali, translated by Emanuele Ragnisco (Hoepli); Piero Martin, Questo è quanto: la fisica quantistica in cinque idee (Laterza); Giorgio Chinnici, Lo specchio del tempo. Simmetrie, inversioni e leggi della fisica (Codice); Silvia Kuna Ballero, Rapsodia marziana. Scienza, fiction e ideologia nell’immaginario di Marte (Codice).
